Becoming mindful of these common cognitive distortions will help you understand yourself and other people better, and improve your decision making. Cognitive distortions – a concept from Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy – refer to biased ways of thinking about oneself and the world around us. The model essentially states that there are specific ways people distort their thinking. These irrational thoughts and beliefs (i.e., distortions) can lead to problematic emotional states and behaviour, like anxiety, low self-esteem, depression and relationship conflicts:
