Attributes of Effective Coaches and Coaching
What makes for an effective coach can vary with the specific type of coaching; however, the existing literature identifies some key attributes that hold true across the board. Effective coaches tend to be conscientious, open, extroverted, emotionally stable, self-aware, ethical, trustworthy, caring, adaptable, good communicators, nonjudgmental, respectful, and positive. Intuition is also an important ingredient of great coaching, adding another dimension of perception. Intuition allows a coach to finely tailor every moment of interaction to what each individual client may most benefit from in that moment. Effective coaches are themselves continually learning, growing, and changing and undergoing self-reflection and self-assessment.
